ColoRail Board President, Ira P. Schreiber and lead attorney, Philipp Theune
will address the press regarding concerns about the redevelopment plan and
the specifics of the suit. ColoRail finds the proposed plan short on
transportation services that were committed to in the earlier planning
processes and published documents. Specific concerns include the lack of
expansion capacity for future transportation services, including planned
passenger rail on the I-70 and Front Range corridors; insufficient passenger
convenience and connectivity; and proposed project design features that are
excessively costly to construct, will seriously disturb the neighborhood,
and entail unnecessarily high operation and maintenance costs that have yet
to be fully explained to the public.
The press conference is being held at the existing light rail tracks and
within sight of the Consolidated Main Line where the light rail is proposed
to be relocated. Speakers will address site specifics and will be available
to walk through the area to assist participants in understanding the issues.
Public officials, including local, state, and Federal representatives are
also receiving this media alert and are invited to attend and/or send staff.
About ColoRail
ColoRail was founded in 1989 to promote passenger rail services in and
through Colorado. An all volunteer and member-driven organization with
nearly 700 subscribers receiving a regular newsletter and periodic e-mail
alerts about passenger rail issues and events, ColoRail serves as the
primary grassroots advocate for state-wide and inter-regional rail services.
Members regularly serve as Denver Union Station welcome hosts and members of
the board have duly participated in seven years of public processes for
redevelopment planning of Denver Union Station. The organization is rooted
in the Save Our Station (SOS) campaign founded during the Peña
Administration by among others, then local brewer and restaurateur, the
Honorable John Hickenlooper to prevent the end of passenger rail service at
Denver Union Station.
